What Momiji Study stores

In your browser (localStorage)

Momiji Study keeps your study state on your own device so it survives a reload. Nothing here is sent to us.

• momiji:progress:v2 — which kanji you have passed, and when each is next due for review.
• momiji:session:v1 — an unfinished five-minute session, so you can resume it.
• momiji:view-history:v1 — the last 30 kanji you opened, each with the time you opened it.
• momiji:known:v1 — the same known-kanji list in an older format, kept for backwards compatibility.
• momiji:suspended:v1 — kanji you have set aside.
• momiji:study-days:v1 — the calendar of days you studied, which is what the streak counts.
• momiji:locale:v1, momiji:guide-seen:v1, momiji:study-settings:v1 — your language choice, whether you have seen the intro, and your level and session size.

Clearing site data in your browser removes all of it. There is no way for us to recover it, because we never had it. Exporting your progress writes this same record, including the study-day calendar, to a file on your device; nothing is uploaded.

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 (property G-F1RF7PLWGE) to count page views and to see which parts of the study tools people actually use. It runs in cookieless mode with Consent Mode defaults set to denied, so it stores nothing on your device and there is nothing for a cookie banner to ask about. Google Signals, advertising personalisation and cross-device features are switched off. Alongside page views we record a small set of interaction events: which kanji you open or search for, whether you mark one as known, whether a recall answer was right or wrong, when a study session starts and finishes together with its level and size, when you finish a stroke trace and how many mistakes it took, when you export your progress, and when you switch language. The text you type into search is never sent — only how many characters it was. Your stored progress record is never sent. Google’s own processing is described in its privacy policy. Most content blockers stop the analytics script entirely and the site works exactly the same.

Hosting

The site is served from Google Cloud Run. Like any web server, each request is logged with the time, your full IP address, your browser string, the referring page and the URL you asked for — which, on a kanji page, is the kanji you were reading. These logs are kept for 30 days and are used for reliability and abuse investigation. They live in the same Google Cloud project as other services run by the same author, so they are not held in isolation from them.
